A balanced raw meal is about much more than putting meat into a bowl.
Muscle meat is an important part of a dog’s diet because it provides protein, amino acids and other nutrients. But muscle meat alone is not enough.
Edible bone can provide important minerals, particularly calcium and phosphorus. The amount needs to be appropriate because too much bone can contribute to constipation and nutritional imbalance.
Organs are another important component. Liver and other suitable organs provide nutrients that are difficult to obtain from muscle meat alone.
Healthy fats are also valuable for energy and can support skin and coat health.
Depending on the feeding approach, carefully selected vegetables and other ingredients may also form part of the overall diet.
Variety matters too. Different proteins provide different nutrient profiles, so relying on the same meat every day can unnecessarily limit the diet.
The overall goal is balance, variety and suitability for the individual dog.
